Ragia Forest: A Historic and Scenic Gem in the Aberdares

Nestled in Lari, Kiambu County—about 90 km north of Nairobi—Ragia Forest offers both natural beauty and deep historical significance. Known as a refuge for Mau Mau freedom fighters, this serene section of the Aberdares features caves, dense bamboo trails, and stunning waterfalls that once sustained Kenya’s liberation heroes.

The hike to Ragia is accessible and relatively easy compared to other Aberdares routes. Along the way, visitors pass the impressive Sasumua Dam before beginning an 18 km trail that takes approximately 7 hours to complete. The journey leads to the powerful No. 17 and No. 18 waterfalls, whose echoes and mist create a breathtaking atmosphere.

Though generally moderate, parts of the descent can be challenging, so sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. Ragia is an ideal destination for adventurers seeking both natural wonder and a walk through Kenya’s rich history.
