Mount Longonot Hike – Crater Rim Challenge in the Rift Valley

The Mount Longonot Hike is a favorite day trek in Kenya. Located just 70 km from Nairobi, this dormant volcano rises dramatically from the Great Rift Valley floor. Its jagged crater rim offers spectacular views of Lake Naivasha and surrounding landscapes. This trail attracts both new and seasoned hikers seeking a fast, scenic challenge.

You’ll ascend steep volcanic trails, traverse the crater rim, and witness Kenya’s natural beauty from a unique vantage point. The experience is both exhilarating and rewarding.

Explore the Steep Trails and Crater Rim

The hike begins at the KWS gate and immediately climbs through dry forest. After about 3.1 km, you’ll reach the crater rim at 2,776 meters above sea level. The main climb is short but steep, with loose volcanic gravel requiring sure footing.

Mount Longonot last erupted in the 19th century. Today, the volcano is dormant, and its crater has filled with forest. The contrast between the lush interior and the dry outer slopes is striking.

Wildlife sightings are rare but possible on the lower slopes—zebras, antelopes, and giraffes roam nearby. The hike offers a glimpse into Kenya’s geological history and a welcome escape into nature.
