Mount Satima Wandare Trail Hike – Kenya’s Hidden Highland Route
Standing tall at 4,001 meters (13,126 feet), Mount Satima is the highest peak in the Aberdare Range and the third tallest in Kenya. While the mountain is often accessed through the more frequented Dragon’s Teeth route, hiking Mount Satima via Wandare Trail offers a quieter and equally spectacular journey through untamed terrain and sweeping moorlands.
Discover the Tranquility of Hiking Mount Satima via Wandare Trail
This hidden gem of a trail starts from Wandare Gate, located off the Nyeri-Nyahururu highway near Mweiga. Unlike the more popular routes, hiking Mount Satima via Wandare Trail immerses you in the quiet solitude of Aberdare’s northern sector, where dense bamboo forests give way to vast, open moorlands. It’s an ideal route for hikers seeking both beauty and challenge.

Trail Overview and Experience
After registering at Wandare Gate, the adventure begins with a scenic 15km drive through lush forests rich in birdlife and the occasional wildlife sighting. The actual hike kicks off at the forest edge, where the landscape opens into golden high-altitude moorlands. This transition sets the tone for a serene and rewarding trek as you climb gently toward the summit ridge.
The Reward at the Peak

The trail leads you to the summit of Mount Satima, where you’ll be greeted with panoramic views over Kenya’s central highlands. On clear days, you can see Mount Kenya in the distance. The peacefulness of the route, paired with the physical challenge, makes the summit moment even more fulfilling.
