SOME FACTS ABOUT CHYULU HILLS

Chyulu are hundreds of green hills composed of volcanic vents, deep ash craters, cones, lava flows and valleys rising to an altitude of 2,188m high and covering an area of about 150km long from end to end. They are among the world’s youngest volcanic hills and the most beautiful of ranges dividing Kambaland and Maasailand. The hills contain large lava tubes and deep caves that have been rated as the longest in Africa. The rolling hills are covered by a beautiful forest ecosystem with maturing woodlands, grassland and thickets that form reasonable feeding grounds for wildlife from Tsavo and Amboseli plains. The hills are a vital water catchment area providing water to livestock, wildlife as well as millions of Kenyans in places as far as the Kenyan coastal regions through Mzima Springs and Umani Springs.

Chyulu is home to Kenya’s last, truly wild, Rhinos among other wildlife such as Buffalos, Bushbucks, Elands, Elephants, Leopards, Giant Forest hogs, Bush pigs, Reedbucks, Giraffes etc.
