About This Event

The Kilimambogo Hike, also known as Ol Donyo Sabuk, is a rewarding day hike set within a gazetted national park east of Nairobi. The trail combines steady forest ascents, rich wildlife habitats, and historical landmarks, culminating in panoramic summit views that stretch across Central Kenya on clear days.
Kilimambogo, officially known as Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park, is located near Thika and rises prominently above the surrounding plains. The hike begins at the park gate and follows a well-established trail that steadily climbs through dense forest, open clearings, and rocky sections as it approaches the summit. The gradual ascent makes it accessible to hikers with moderate fitness levels while still offering a solid physical challenge. The forested slopes of Kilimambogo are home to a variety of wildlife, including buffalo, monkeys, bushbuck, and numerous bird species, making the hike both scenic and immersive. As elevation increases, the forest thickens, allowing expansive views of the Athi Plains, Mount Kenya region, and parts of Nairobi on clear days. A major highlight of the hike is the historical McMillan’s Grave located near the summit, adding cultural and historical significance to the experience. The summit area provides ample space to rest, take photos, and enjoy the cool breeze before descending along the same route. The Kilimambogo Hike is ideal for beginners seeking to build hiking endurance, as well as intermediate hikers looking for a convenient training hike close to Nairobi. Its mix of nature, wildlife, history, and moderate terrain makes it a favourite for both first-time hikers and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Preparation Guidelines

• Get moving with active cardio exercises like aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming during the week leading up to the event.
• Designate the day before the hike for some well-deserved rest—give your body a break from intense exercises.
• Amp up your hydration game at least two days before hitting the trail.
• Make sure to prioritize a good night's sleep before the hike.
• Boost your energy reserves by upping your carbohydrate intake two days prior. If you're into intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a one-day break around the hike.
• Trim those toenails—your feet will thank you later!
• Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at least three hours before the event. This ensures your body has time to digest, providing the energy you need without making your stomach feel too full.
• Take a pre-hike bathroom break at home to minimize pit stops during your journey.
• Prepare your mindset for self-conquest. Remember, hiking is 90% mental, 10% physical prep. Once you conquer your mind, the rest is a breeze. You've got this!
