About This Event

This hike takes you through the vast Kinangop Plateau, crossing open moorlands, tussock grass, and boggy sections to reach one of Kenya’s highest summits. The trail offers wide scenic views, cool mountain air, and a true wilderness feel. It’s a physically demanding but rewarding hike with a unique highland landscape.
The Mt. Kinangop hike via the Mutarakwa Route begins with a gradual approach across farmland before opening up into the expansive Kinangop Plateau. The landscape quickly transitions into high-altitude moorland characterized by thick tussock grass, muddy patches, and occasional bog sections that require careful footing. Unlike forest hikes, this trail is largely exposed, giving hikers uninterrupted views of the surrounding ranges and distant peaks. As you progress deeper into the plateau, the terrain becomes wetter and more challenging, especially after rainfall. The trail is not always clearly defined, often requiring guidance and navigation across the open ground. The climb toward the summit is gradual but demanding due to the altitude and ground conditions rather than steepness. Reaching the summit of Mt. Kinangop, the third-highest peak in Kenya, is a rewarding experience marked by sweeping panoramic views and a sense of isolation in the highlands. The return journey follows the same route, with the descent offering a faster but equally engaging trek across the moorland. Expect cold, windy conditions and the possibility of sudden weather changes, making this a true endurance hike suited for experienced hikers.

Preparation Guidelines

• Get moving with active cardio exercises like aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming during the week leading up to the event.
• Designate the day before the hike for some well-deserved rest—give your body a break from intense exercises.
• Amp up your hydration game at least two days before hitting the trail.
• Make sure to prioritize a good night's sleep before the hike.
• Boost your energy reserves by upping your carbohydrate intake two days prior. If you're into intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a one-day break around the hike.
• Trim those toenails—your feet will thank you later!
• Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at least three hours before the event. This ensures your body has time to digest, providing the energy you need without making your stomach feel too full.
• Take a pre-hike bathroom break at home to minimize pit stops during your journey.
• Prepare your mindset for self-conquest. Remember, hiking is 90% mental, 10% physical prep. Once you conquer your mind, the rest is a breeze. You've got this!
