A scenic forest journey to cascading falls through bamboo and river valleys

About This Event

This full‑day hike explores the lush Ragia Forest on the southern edge of the Aberdare Range, following winding paths through bamboo and indigenous forest to multiple waterfalls. Hikers experience dramatic forest scenery, cool river air, and steep trail sections down to roaring cascades. The adventure feels remote and natural, offering rich flora and the chance to visit historical Mau Mau hideouts.
Starting near Sasumua Dam, the trail leads deep into Ragia Forest through dense bamboo thickets and mixed woodland. The route follows old elephant paths and forest tracks, gradually descending toward the Sasumua River. Along the way you’ll pass sections of forest rich in birdlife and shaded by towering trees. After a long steady descent the trail reaches the first notable waterfall where water thunders over the rocks into deep pools. From here the path continues through riverbanks and forest toward additional cascades and the area around the historical Mau Mau caves, used as hideouts during Kenya’s liberation struggle. The forest landscape feels timeless and peaceful, with misty valleys, moss‑covered rocks, and the rhythmic sound of flowing water. The final approach to the main falls rewards hikers with dramatic views and a chance to rest beside the rushing water before the return climb. The hike is mostly forested with one long steep descent and corresponding climb, requiring careful footing on wet or slippery ground. Expect cool, sometimes wet weather under the canopy and the feel of deep natural wilderness as you track through one of Kenya’s more secluded forest landscapes. The full hike is a rewarding day‑long adventure for those comfortable with mixed terrain and waterfall exploration.

Preparation Guidelines

• Get moving with active cardio exercises like aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming during the week leading up to the event.
• Designate the day before the hike for some well-deserved rest—give your body a break from intense exercises.
• Amp up your hydration game at least two days before hitting the trail.
• Make sure to prioritize a good night's sleep before the hike.
• Boost your energy reserves by upping your carbohydrate intake two days prior. If you're into intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a one-day break around the hike.
• Trim those toenails—your feet will thank you later!
• Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at least three hours before the event. This ensures your body has time to digest, providing the energy you need without making your stomach feel too full.
• Take a pre-hike bathroom break at home to minimize pit stops during your journey.
• Prepare your mindset for self-conquest. Remember, hiking is 90% mental, 10% physical prep. Once you conquer your mind, the rest is a breeze. You've got this!
