About This Event

The Kijabe Hills Hike is a scenic adventure along the eastern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, offering a mix of forest trails, open ridges, and breathtaking viewpoints. Located near Kijabe town, this hike rewards adventurers with panoramic views of the Rift Valley floor and surrounding highlands.
The Kijabe Hills Hike is a scenic adventure along the eastern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, located about 60 km northwest of Nairobi near Kijabe town. The hills form part of the dramatic Kikuyu Escarpment, rising to elevations of around 2,600 meters above sea level and offering sweeping views of the Rift Valley landscape below. The trail typically begins near the lower sections of the escarpment close to the Nairobi–Naivasha corridor before gradually working its way through open countryside and rural villages. Early sections of the hike often follow relatively gentle terrain, including stretches near the historic railway line that once formed part of the old Uganda Railway. As hikers progress deeper into the trail, the landscape becomes more dramatic with forested slopes, rocky escarpment paths, and valleys that showcase the raw beauty of the Rift Valley ecosystem. One of the unique highlights of the hike is the famous dark railway tunnel carved during the construction of the Mombasa–Kisumu railway in the late 19th century. This atmospheric section of the trail gives hikers a brief encounter with the region’s colonial-era railway history and adds an adventurous element to the hike. Nearby hot springs and forest corridors further enrich the experience as the trail moves through the Kijabe section of the Kinale Forest landscape. The final ascent toward the upper hills involves a steady climb through scrubland and planted forest before reaching the higher escarpment ridges. From these vantage points, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Great Rift Valley, including sights of Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, and surrounding volcanic formations that dominate the valley floor. With its combination of historical landmarks, forest sections, escarpment ridges, and expansive Rift Valley scenery, the Kijabe Hills Hike offers a diverse and memorable hiking experience. The trail provides a perfect balance of moderate challenge and spectacular landscapes, making it an excellent choice for hikers looking to explore one of the most scenic escarpment routes near Nairobi.

• Amp up your hydration game at least two days before hitting the trail.
• Make sure to prioritize a good night's sleep before the hike.
• Boost your energy reserves by upping your carbohydrate intake two days prior. If you're into intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a one-day break around the hike.
• Trim those toenails—your feet will thank you later!
• Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at least three hours before the event. This ensures your body has time to digest, providing the energy you need without making your stomach feel too full.
• Take a pre-hike bathroom break at home to minimize pit stops during your journey.
