LIKII NORTH MT KENYA HIKE

The Road Less Traveled to Kenya's Alpine Heart

Saturday, March 7, 2026
4:30 AM - 6:00 PM
Day hike

About This Event

Experience Mount Kenya's pristine beauty via a lesser-known route, ascending from Old Moses Camp through spectacular moorlands and heath vegetation to the scenic Liki North viewpoint at 3,993m, with unobstructed views of the majestic peaks Batian and Nelion on clear days.
The Liki North route offers a quieter alternative to Mount Kenya's crowded trails, branching off from the main Sirimon path after Old Moses Camp (3,300m). This 12km round-trip journey takes you through stunning Mackinder's Valley, where moorlands adorned with giant lobelias and groundsels gradually open to reveal spectacular views of the mountain's iconic twin peaks. The trail follows a gradual to moderate incline, crossing the Liki North River and passing through increasingly sparse vegetation as you climb. At 3,993m, the Liki North viewpoint offers breathtaking vistas of glacier-clad Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) on clear mornings. This isolated location provides excellent wildlife spotting opportunities and serves as ideal acclimatization for those planning higher summit attempts. Weather changes rapidly—expect cold winds and potential fog, making early starts and proper layered clothing essential.

Preparation Guidelines

Get moving with active cardio exercises like aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming during the week leading up to the event.
Designate the day before the hike for some well-deserved rest—give your body a break from intense exercises.
Amp up your hydration game at least two days before hitting the trail.
Make sure to prioritize a good night's sleep before the hike.
Boost your energy reserves by upping your carbohydrate intake two days prior. If you're into intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a one-day break around the hike.
Trim those toenails—your feet will thank you later!
Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at least three hours before the event. This ensures your body has time to digest, providing the energy you need without making your stomach feel too full.
Take a pre-hike bathroom break at home to minimize pit stops during your journey.
Prepare your mindset for self-conquest. Remember, hiking is 90% mental, 10% physical prep. Once you conquer your mind, the rest is a breeze. You've got this!
